Thriving at Work

A partner found herself in a workplace dilemma.

She loved her organization’s mission and enjoyed the respect and appreciation of her colleagues and boss. But she was struggling under the weight of unrealistic responsibilities and falling behind despite stretching her work schedule. The job was taking a toll.

Looking for a way to succeed in her boss’s eyes and her own, she wanted a place to describe her experience fully and confidentially to a trusted supporter outside her workplace.

I listened, asked questions, and shared observations. She transformed a tangle of challenges into a clear explanation of the dynamics that defined her experience. Then she created a plan to pursue a refreshed, carefully honed vision for success.

Today, she continues to make a difference in cutting-edge, racial justice work.

What an honor to partner with her in that challenging moment. The opportunity to support my partners is the opportunity to support people and achievements that matter.

Q:  What’s this work?

A: Creating, finding, and seizing opportunities to succeed at work.

What?
Who?

Q:  Who’s it for?

A: For professionals who’d like an external partner’s support as they define and pursue their unique versions of success in the workplace.

How?
Benefits?

Q:  How does it happen?

A: Potential partners and I start by answering one another’s questions and assessing our potential to work as effective partners. When it seems like a fit, we build a plan together.

I start by learning about their role, their workplace, and the context, objectives, opportunities, culture, and challenges that define their job for them.

Early in these collaborations, I suggest that new partners clarify their vision for success at work. A thoughtful, carefully refined articulation drives everything we do next.

Q:  What’s it done for your partners?

A: In this work, my partners have:

  • Found and achieved win-wins for themselves and their workplaces

  • Clarified challenges and implemented strategies to address them

  • Strengthened key relationships

  • Improved communication with key workplace partners

  • Advocated constructively for themselves and their teams

  • Secured workplace investments in their professional growth
